CPI and HICP price indexes have different methodologies.
- CPI – consumer price index – tracks prices that households face
- ECB uses HICP inflation to target its policy, HICP (Harmonised Indices of Consumer Prices) inflation excludes policy change (like change in value added tax rate, change in subsidies on public transport) and harmonises various differences across countries (housing prices, ...)

Comparison of three countries, one with high wages and prices, two with lower wages and prices:
- Germany – founding European Monetary Union country
- Slovenia – adopted € in 2007
- Slovakia – adopted € in 2009
